The BackstoryThe Cruise Against Cancer started in New York nearly a decade ago. Our Brother, Steve Russell decided to find a way to help fight Cancer. Our Mother was taken from us by Cancer in 2001 and he wanted to raise funds in her honor. Steve’s Son Colin worked on the Lauren Kristy, a 65 foot turn-of-the-century style riverboat. So, during a family get together in 2017, we were reminiscing and decided that they may have the Ocean, But we have a river! Later that evening the Minnesota Cruise Against Cancer 2018 had begun.
Duluth Waterfront Tour

Duluth consists of several compact districts including Bayfront, Canal Park, the Historic Arts and Theater (HART) District, Lincoln Park Craft District and downtown. The areas are easily walkable, and just beyond these commercial districts, Park Point boasts one of the world's longest freshwater sand spits, spanning 6 miles. This popular destination includes a local beach with a seasonal lifeguard and a recreation area. Duluth's 130 city parks provide ample opportunity for enjoyment of the outdoors.

Tentatively, cruise ships will dock at the DECC in the downtown area. Combine the pink-sand beaches of Bermuda with a trip to the Bahamas onboard Royal Caribbean’s Grandeur of the Seas for a longer, sun-soaked getaway. The cruise sails from Baltimore and overnights in Port Canaveral, for even more time exploring.

Later that evening the Minnesota Cruise Against Cancer had begun. Cruise Against Cancer is a non-profit dedicated to raising funds for the Relay for Life of the American Cancer Society, with all the funds staying right here locally. Many of our friends and family members, all too often, learn about yet another loved one being diagnosed with some form of cancer. Therefore, it is imperative that we continue doing our part to raise funds for research and to assist with the expenses related to those affected during their treatments. The cruise calls on the private island Princess Cays and includes kayaking, eco tours, and more. This is the first of seven Viking cruises that will be stopping in Duluth through September. Four of these stops will be part of a new option for passengers that can either start or end their cruise here in Duluth. American Queen Voyages will also be making two stops in Duluth this summer.

BUT…we couldn’t always make it to NY for the cruise and we knew many people here in MN who had lost loved ones, were current caregivers or in their own battle against cancer, or were cancer survivors.
